For the professional cornhole players the use of standard cornhole sets is important for taking part in tournaments. But there are people who play the game just for the fun of it. They play with their family and friends, in their backyards or on holidays. For them the most convenient cornhole sets are the all weather cornhole sets where the cornhole boards are made up of plastic and the pitching bags are made of weather resistant cloth which is filled with plastic pellets instead of feed corn. The all weather cornhole sets being weather resistant are not affected by winter snow and the harsh summer sun. There is also no risk of the rooks and squirrels tearing the bags and eating the feed corn.
Though there have been many modifications in the cornhole sets in order to make it more convenient for the general people, yet the fun from the game is not yet lost. Some people prefer the original method of playing the corntoss game where wooden boards and bags full of feed corn were used. In this method the as the corn bag filled with real feed corn, hits the board, a cloud of dust arises out of it to cover everything all around. The old players simply love the dust on them which probably reminds them of the times when the game was played by the rural farmers.
The origin of the corntoss game is not known for sure. Many people have different opinion on the origin of the game and some old players say that this game of corntoss originated in the farmlands of Germany and later rediscovered in Kentucky sometime in the 20th century. The look and the feel of the game suggest that it must have started as a fun way for the farmers while loading corn bags on carts or while putting them in barns after the harvest. They must have waged bets as to who could throw the bags the farthest, which could be the initial versions of the corntoss game.
For a long time this game was played arbitrarily by players and differed from place to place. This process continued till the formation of American Cornhole Association or the ACA. With the formation of ACA the corntoss game got specific rules and regulations and the game got a model format to follow. The rules and regulations are quite flexible and are meant to maintain the standard of the game that all players have to follow for a fair play.
However, when you are playing cornhole games in the backyard or on the beach, you are not really required to follow these rules and buying weather resistant cornhole bags will be more profitable under such circumstances. Usually, the cornhole bags are made with two square pieces of duck canvas stitched together with a quarter inch double stitched seam. According to ACA guidelines, each bag should be filled with two cups of feed corns. The finished bags should measure 6”x6” and weigh between 14 and 16 ounces.
However, filling with feed corns has many disadvantages:
· Creatures like rooks and squirrels will always be eyeing your bags. If you are not careful, they will tear them up in no times to get at the feed corn inside it.
· Real corns develop mildew very easily. If the bags are exposed to dew, rain or snow by any chance, the corns need to be taken out and dried immediately. Otherwise, the bag along with the corns will be wasted totally.
· After quite a few games, the corns in the bags begin to break down. It becomes easier to play then, but if the corns break down too much, they loose some weight and consequently the play of the bags changes. You have to get a new bag then.
According to ACA the set specification for the platform or board is that it has to be made from 48”X 24” inches wooden plywood. The surface should be smooth and sanded. However, this specification has to be followed if you are taking part in a tournament, or else you can use plastic boards also. Corntoss game played on wooden boards is quite different than that played on plastic boards. So choose the one that is more fun.
The corntoss game needs a perfect hand and eye coordination in order to pitch the bag in the hole. Regular play of the game improves the motor skills of an individual and is a good way to exercise also. For the ones who love to play this game with family, all weather cornhole games sets are more convenient because they are easy to maintain and store. So grab your set of corntoss game and get the fun plus the benefit of exercise out of it.
Family outings and picnics will never be complete without these outdoor games. Dave Threadcraft encourages kids and adults alike to play bean bag toss games. This is a fun outdoor game activity with pitching washers that many would enjoy. Information about the game is available on his website.
